"China and India are the future super powers". In recent times, This particular sentence has been hackneyed to say the least. It is first of all an absurd association. Last time when the growth rate curves of China and India met was in 1977. From then on, for three decades, china has been improving at atleast two percent better than us. May be India's chance of becoming one of the super powers in future is significant, but i'm afraid if our political system will let that happen.
Let me start with the most basic issue. India is said to be the largest democracy. Is it right to call India a democracy when post election alliances are allowed without any restrictions? When i don't want a party P to rule the country, i vote for party Q. After the elections P and Q form an alliance and mututally agree between themselves to form a government. Here, my vote is not only useless but has been used at a place where i didn't want it to be used. Democracy? Okay. On seeing this sort of alliances, i decide that even Q isn't the right person. Rather, i come to a conclusion that i don't want to support anyone. All that i can do is, not going to to the polling booth. I cannot express my dissatisfaction over the kind of people contesting. There is NO option to express that you don't support anyone. Again, democracy?
May be we are wrong in interpreting 'democratic india'. It could well mean that democracy applies to only politicians in India and not for common people. India's situation is so worse that simply no action could be taken when 'X' warned the entry of Australian Cricketers into India. Yes, Indians were being harassed in Australia. But 'X' has no rights to warn internationally popular players. After all, 'X' is just a head of a communal party. Leave alone taking action, it was only after Mr. 'Y' went and compromised 'X', the australian players were guaranteed safety. Mr. Y is a cabinet minister.! What a pity?
Another thing that amazes me is the kind of people heading a political party. We all must have grandfathers. I assure you, some of the leaders out there are older than your grandfather. You would have seen that your grandfather tends to forget a thing or two cause of his age. Isn't it biology that aged people are mentally and physically weaker than the younger ones? Is it right to have a quadriplegic person as Chief Minister? A younger person can definitely function better at that place. Yes, I agree that experience is important. That doesn't mean one needs fifty years of experience to become a CM or a PM. Is Indian politics that tough?
Things have to change quick and fast if India has to become one of the super powers. Radical steps and actions should be taken to amend Indian Political System. I personally feel that a team plays in the character of its captain. Similarly, a country is viewed with its leaders as spectacles. It is because of some boorish leaders, India is STILL developing. Time is up people. What are we going to do? Clueless.! But. As a mass we can achieve. So far we havn't used our democracy to full effect. Such boorish, incapable leaders exist only because we hesitate to act against them. Our hands are tied because of fear. The unity that was on display post 26.11 is the key. I would like to remind you all that such type of unity can also be shown to throw out some of our poor politicians from Indian politics and to reconstruct a effective political system.
P.S : I don't object the fact that there are good leaders who are aged. I'm talking about majority, not exceptions.
P.P.S : These are just my views and i don't intend to offend anyone.
good one da....
ReplyDeleteis not our TN ( let alone India ) going towards monarchy (thro the name of 'democracy' ) ????? people in power seem to be invincible....definitely not healthy 'democracy'...
Mr. Y seems to have all the time in his life to juggle so many roles.... No body raises a finger against a full "spectrum" minister...compulsions of the 'coalition' politics...
so many pressing issues are in lurch waiting to be tackled too...Maoist, inflation, kashmir, bhopal,.....
What can I do ???? at the least, be honest , help some one get education, be law abiding...VOTE properly ( to the extent v can b4 elections- with the choices available )... who am i to grumble if all I want and do is improving myself selfishly
Ya senthil.. You are right.. But. If there is protest from all of us at a INTENSITY level same as that of post 26.11, i believe something will turn up.. Things are going out of our hands just because me, you and every Indian citizen COMPROMISES on what's going on. I should say we don't exercise our democracy partly due to selfishness and partly due to the lack of ability to ACT AS A NATION.
ReplyDeleteWell thought out post da..
ReplyDeleteI am in perfect harmony with the way you have discerned the state of politics in our country. The sorry state of affairs prevalent in the political landscape has been a cause for concern for the past couple of decades.
It is time we really delved into the root cause of all this, and if we think about it, the reason may not be hard to gauge. Vote bank politics, which is mainly due to poverty, which is due to unemployment, which is due to over population, which is due to high birth rate and that which is due to us. The issue has been staring at us in the eye, if only we had been graceful enough to admit it! There is simply no reason for us to blame the politicians (which by the way is justified though), when we are so blatantly ignoring the cause of all this. Although i admit that had our politicians still retained the same charisma, aura or the sincerity of our forefathers, Gandhi, Nehru or Shastri, whose integrity were unquestionable , we would still have lived in a better world. Still we must do our part in thwarting the ego centric politicians of today. we must become immune to the advances of these politicians, learn the secrets of helping ourselves create a successful India, devoid of any form of discrimination and hate ideologies. As You mentioned, United we stand, Divided we fall
@Praveen : I'm not in perfect harmony with what you have said though i partially agree with it. In an international stage each and every problem is cause or effect of some other problem. There can be a lot of issues other than what you have mentioned that tend to make our politicians act as stated in the post. For ex, corruption. I agree that the root cause is population and the quality of people but one cannot blame that for everything. The problem in the post could well be handled at a granularity level specific to politicians without blaming population. Ex:China. Okay. Leave all this.
ReplyDeleteOur politicians didn't take effective measures to control the population while Chinese did it. Why? Indian politicians lacked that forethought that Chinese had.
@karthik
ReplyDeleteWith respect to china , i completely agree with you. The absence of forethought is obvious for all to see. I was merely bringing to notice the role of the people in the development of the country. Of course , as u rightly said, politicians do tend to act in a way that is selfish to their interests and completely indifferent to national interests, Still with a little cooperation from the people, such politicians can be thrown out of power. As the future of our country, Lets redeem ourselves, for there is still hope. As Frank Darabont said, lets all hope, for hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.
A gud one sr :) India is actually moving towards d right path but bcoz of sum incapable and willful politicians , the growth rate is weakening. Also political instability is seen widely in our nation like inflation rate touching double digits, opposition bandh affecting crores of rupees etc etc. So its time to think.!! Keep updating sr :)
